The very first scene makes us into sympathy and thrusts into the head of a man emerging from a coma state. The name butterfly indicated in the title is because Jeans stroke has left him paralyzed, trapped in the diving bell of his own body, with only his left eye,which blinks like a butterfly. Director Julian Schnabel has well crafted and uses his maximum effort and his thoughts as a painter to assemble a tragic collage of fantastical images to reveal the physical wreck that Jean has become.
