Many people are big fan of horror movies. They love the suspense and action of horror movies. Now a days, horror movies are often criticized for their graphic violence and are often dismissed as low budget B-movies. Anyway i present the list of top ten horror movies are in the following,
1. Psycho
Psycho is the suspense or horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It is released in 1960. It is based on the novel of the same name by Robert Bloch. The film depicts the encounter between a secretary Marion Crane and the motel’s owner the lonely Norman Bates. It is acclaimed as one of the most effective horror films. Every scene of this film is legendary, and many have been copied or parodied. . The characters of this film were great, the direction is perfect and the music is very good. It is absolutely fantastic.
2. The Shining
The Shining is a horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick released in 1980. It is based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. It is the story of a family containing a man Jack Torrance stars Jack Nicholson, his wife Wendy stars Shelley Duvall and their son Danny stars Danny Lloyd . They stayed in hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future. This is an excellent horror movie. Because the focus is on horror and fear rather than gore alone .
3. Jaws
Jaws is a thriller or horror film directed by Steven Spielberg released in 1975. It is the story of a police chief of Amity Island tries to protect beachgoers from a great white shark by closing the beach. After several attacks, the police chief enlists the help of a marine biologist and a professional shark hunter. Roy Scheider stars as police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss as marine biologist Matt Hooper. It is regarded as a watershed film in motion picture history, the father of the summer blockbuster movie and one of the first “high concept” films. Jaws won Academy Awards for Film Editing, Music and Sound. It was also nominated for Best Picture. The genius in Jaws is its ability to build suspense. The Shark is never really shown till near the end of the film. When ever the Shark is approaching its victims, we get the Sharks point of view, instead of seeing the Shark. Jaws is definitely Spielberg’s best film at all.
4. Carrie
Carrie is a American horror film directed by Brian De Palma release in 1976.It is based on the novel by Stephen King. It is the story of a teenage girl, Carrie White, who discovers she possesses telekinetic powers after being subjected to both physical and mental harassment by her peers, teachers, and her mother. The film stars Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Betty Buckley, Amy Irving, and John Travolta.It is regarded as a watershed in the horror genre and is seen as one of best feature film adaptations of a Stephen King work. The story has a haunting tone, also centered on youth and yearning.
5. The Birds
The Birds is a horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock released in 1963. It is based on the short story The Birds by Daphne du Maurier. It is the story of A wealthy San Francisco playgirl pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people there in increasing numbers and with increasing viciousness. The film’s innovative special effects, soundtrack, and apocalyptic theme influenced later revenge of nature disaster films. The Birds did not have a music score or an ending in the conventional sense. Overall, this is an awesome movie. It is a perfect example of why Alfred Hitchcock is considered, “The Master of Suspense”.

The Exorcist is an Academy Award-winning American horror film released in 1973. It is based on the novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty. It deals the demonic possession of a young girl, and her mother’s desperate attempts to win back her daughter through an exorcism conducted by two priests. It became one of the most profitable horror films of all time and has had significant impact on viewers. The film earned ten Academy Award nominations for Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay. It presents to us the mystery of faith in it’s most raw form, the battle of good and evil. It is an incomparable masterpiece of film, done without the aid of computers and special effects. In the end, it makes us ask ourselves what we believe, and keeps us wondering and shuddering at exact ally what might be out there.
Rosemary’s Baby is a American horror film written and directed by Roman Polanski released in 1968. It is based on novel of the same name by Ira Levin. The story focuses on Rosemary Woodhouse, a young housewife, and her struggling actor husband Guy after they move into the Bramford, a New York City apartment building with a history of unsavory tenants and mysterious events. This is definitely one of the best horror films ever made. The conspiracy that Rosemary goes throughout the film is truly creepy. It has power to make the audience nervous, tense and very scared.
8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a American independent horror film released in 1974. It is written, directed and produced by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel . It revolves primarily around a group of friends who embark on a road trip in rural Texas, only to fall victim to a family of cannibals, including the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface. Special effects of this film were fairly simple and likewise limited by the budget. The blood shown was often real, as the cast members were accidentally harmed during filming. After all this is a perfect horror film.
Night of the Living Dead is a horror film released in 1990. It is directed by Tom Savini.It is a remake of George A. Romero’s 1968 classic, Night of the Living Dead. It is the story of a group of people are trapped inside a farmhouse as legions of the walking dead try to get inside and use them for food. Night of the Living Dead is 90’s top film, it’s how remakes should be done & is a fantastic homage to original that is a great film in it’s own right.
10. The Thing
The Thing is a science fiction or horror film directed by John Carpenter released in 1982. It is remake of the 1951 Christian Nyby film The Thing from Another World. It is the story of Scientists in the Antarctic are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills. . All of the actors give strong, realistic performances and the special effects are so powerful that they stand as their own main character. This film has something for any lover of the horror generation.
